I was One of the three SBD pilots raked over by a Zero during the fly
out following the attack on IJN Shokaku on 26 october, 1942.
My oldest son called my attention to the on line review, which I read
recently for the first time. I was unaware that this incident was even recorded. Lt. Moore died many years ago, and Capt Kirk Kirpatrick passed away this past winter. I was a Bombing Squadron 8
pilot flying Scouting 8 SBD. I had been assigned that side number, due to it's deck spot with VB-8 SBD's. We were not exactly sitting ducks, but constantly moving up and down, while trying to provide tail clear shots for our crewman gunners. The written description accurately depicted that moment in time. I will never forget the Battle of Santa Cruz.
