This book serves double duty...a narrative of the "Silent Service" during WWII in the Pacific or as a historical reference. The narrative gives you the feel of the men of the submarine fleet; the personalities of the sub drivers, what their lives are like beneath the waves, riding the boats into harm's way. As a historical reference it is full of tables, charts, and figures detailing the war effort from a statistical point of view.
I personally used this book for both back in high school. First I read it from cover to cover, then wrote a research paper on the topic, using the book as one of several references. So enthralled I was with the submarine fleet that after high school I became part of it, literally.

easily one of the most informative books about world war 11 operations there is, both in its explanations of the strategic objectives that the ops. were trying to achieve and the background of these objectives. Plus a very full account of the carrying out of these operations. A truely magnificent achievement! I look forward to reading about Hitler's U-boat War. Congratulations.

Awesome BookThis is the definitive work on the Submarine War against Japan. After a poor start these men took the war to the shores of Japan and in the process sent her merchant marine to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The appendixes cover every patrol and thier actions from start to finish. A truly brilliant piece of work from Clay Blair
