Rates this book:
This book is one of the best divisional histories I have read. Any serious student on the Waffen-SS, the Eastern Front and Third Reich occupation policies and strategies must read/own "To Battle".
The division, although a rather obscure formation, has a number of books written on it. Michael Melnyk's book is easily by far the best. The use of primary sources, first-hand reports and excellent picture material makes this book difficult to put down. It really is a massive effort by the author. The only criticism I have is that the book does not include an index.
This site mentions that Melnyk will be privately publishing an addition to this book based on research he was not able to use in the above book. I'm very curious as to what more information one could have after reading "To Battle"; therefore I'm eagerly looking forward to Melnyk's second book.

Interested in military
history of the elite of the Third Reich, the Waffen SS?
Than this book is for you! M. Melnyk focuses on the history of one
of the most debated divisions, the 14th grenadier division, SS
Galicia. Composed of Ukrainians, this division was primary formed to
do combat on the Eastern Front. Because the division was one of the
first divisions formed from the Eastern Europeans, it also became an
important propaganda tool. The author focuses on the history ofthe
division from its very formation to the very last moments of its
existance, as part of Ukrainian National Army. The author provides
over 300 rare photographs, most of which are published for the very
first time.
A section of the book is also spend on uniforms,
divisional documents and Ukrainians serving in other German sponsored
formations. Out of other books written on Galicia division, "To
Battle" proves to be the most comprehensive and historically correct book
on the subject. I strongly recomed this book, as an exellent source
of information on foreign volunteers of Waffen SS and WWII military
history.
