Atkinson's first volume of his "Liberation Trilogy" is a real winner. This book relates the story of the war in North Africa from the starting point of Operation Torch to the final reckoning of Axis forces in Tunisia. Full of richly rendered characters and little-known battles, Atkinson seems to know more words than any writer you may ever read, but the depth of research and storytelling is astonishing. A must-read.
