Wow! This is one of just two books you should read about Omaha Beach. Balkoski does a fantastic job blending personal accounts with his text. He also writes very clearly, precisely, and vividly. The maps are excellent; more WWII books should follow this example. What Balkoski largely omits (justifiably, as he focuses on the combat on Omaha Beach) is the planning stage for the landing. Some of this is indeed covered in the early chapters, but for a more thorough analysis (including some conclusions that support Balkoski, and others that do not) you should read Omaha Beach: A Flawed Victory by Adrian Lewis.

The best account of Omaha Beach I have ever read. Easy to follow and excellent research.
