This is the best book about WW2 US tanks and tank destroyers that I have ever read. The author (Charles M. Baily, and yes, this 'Baily' has no 'e' in it) was a US Army Lieutenant Colonel, since ret'd after writing the book, and unfortumately now deceased.

"Faint Praise..." is extensively researched and documented by a person knowledgeable of the subject.

LTC Baily told me that the book did not 'sell' well. I'm not sure why that happened, but I'll offer a guess as to why: Such books are bought by people who expect many illustrations of the equipment written about. In my opinion, this book has too few illustrations and the 'few' are too small.

Anyway, the book is a valuable research tool -- if a copy can be found.

This is a superb book on a very narrow topic. The book itself is rather small and is long out of print so I had to use ILL to obtain a copy.

I read it and two of my board war gaming friends also read it. We all agreed that very few books twice its size had this much solid information.

If you want a solid review of US Army doctrine and also Ordnance Dept. development, than this book should be perused.

I have since obtained a copy.
