What struck me most about this book is how well the bi-lateral "alliances" Hitler worked out fit into Hitler's general method of operating the Nazi government and the German military.

Everything was arranged to first maximize Hitler's authority. All else was secondary, even if that was detrimental to the long-term viability of Germany. Put directly, DiNardo shows that Germany failed at coalitional warfare because there was no serious attempt to engage in it.

Couple that with a series of alliances with countries that were either ambivalent about Germany's war aims (Finland) or with countries that were openly hostile to each other (Hungary and Romania), there was zero chance of success.

A great book, especially if read in context with Nazi foreign policy generally.
