Notes from Stone & Stone

Bruce Gamble doesn't step up to the plate very often, but it seems like he always hits a homerun. A thoughtful, finely crafted, highly evocative book about the loss of Rabaul and its defenders.

Re "morituri vos salutamus", I was with Wing Cmdr Lerew and PO Lempiere after burial of RAAF pilots at Rabaul and helped with message sent by Lerew. Do not remember who first mentioned gladiators but it was I who composed the Latin sentence and helped Lempriere to transmit the massage for Lerew. I had studied Latin for three years at University. For further evidence see Canberra Times,May 29, 1982 and Jan 18, 1992, articles by Frank Cranston.
