David H. Grover
Western Maritime Press
This is the remarkable story of the President Harrison, a passenger ship of
American President Lines, which was asked by the Navy to rescue 200 Marines
stranded in North China a few days before Pearl Harbor. As the war began the
ship was stopped by the Japanese at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The captain
tried to scuttle her by ramming her onto a nearby island, and succeeded partially.
The crew abandoned the ship, but were captured and sent back aboard to assist
the Japanese salvage her. Eventually the crewmen became prisoners in Shanghai
for the balance of the war, while the ship was used as a transport by the Japanese
until sunk by an American submarine.
